Dissent against a recent law raising the minimum retirement age to 64 has been widespread across various parts of French society over the last few months, and could even briefly spill over into football during this weekend’s Coupe de France final between Nantes and Toulouse.
One of France’s primary trade unions, the CGT, have notably been carrying out targeted power cuts in protest. President Emmanuel Macron’s presence at the Stade de France on Saturday evening has raised concern among organisers that the event could be earmarked as well, according to RMC this afternoon.
RMC add that talks have taken place between Enedis – EDF’s subsidiary in charge of France’s electricity distribution network – and local authorities so as to best prepare the Saint Denis stadium for a possible intentional power cut. Preventative measures have been put in place, such as the installation of four extra generators that would be capable of supplying the Stade de France with enough energy. Although the risk of power cuts is being taken seriously by the parties involved with organising the final, they are nevertheless optimistic that the event will be able to run smoothly.
